Week Ending April 19

Cradley caused controversy in their Gulf British League match at Oxford by walking out after heat 8. The weather conditions were poor and, after a snow storm which made visibility very poor, the team decided they would not continue. The Speedway Star  report, written by the Oxford track reporter Bob Kilburn, suggested that the opposition team had given up unnecessarily and that they might not have done so if they had been in the lead at the time.

Swedish ace Bengt Jansson was prevented from riding for Reading in their Spring Gold Cup match at Hackney. He was served with an injunction during the Daily Express Spring Classic on the day before after Wolverhampton had gone to court over his removal from the Wolves 1975 squad by Rider Control. Jansson’s placement was tied up in the tangle of Rider Control allocations involving Ole Olsen and Garry Middleton.

Up at Oxford, promoters Danny Dunton and Bob Dugard warned that they would pull the team out of speedway unless the track was left in a better condition by the stock car organizers with whom they shared the stadium. Problems had included a damaged safety fence and a number of pieces of metal left on the track after the stock car racing. The management at Cowley was very concerned by the threat and stadium manager Clark Osborne said, ‘Speedway must stay at Oxford.’

Australian star Phil Crump won the Daily Express Spring Classic at Wimbledon, scoring 12 points from his five rides and taking away the prize money of £500. Barry Briggs was the runner-up with three wins and two third places while Peter Collins took third place, also with three wins. Behind him, Ole olsen, Terry Betts and Malcolm Simmons all finished on 10 points.
