Week Ending July 5

OLE OLSEN equalled the Monmore Green track record in recording a blistering 2-0 win over Golden Helmet holder Phil Crump before the match between Wolverhampton and Newport. Olsen, who had been beaten by the same score at Newport the previous week, ensured that a run-off was necessary which was to be held at King’s Lynn on Saturday, July 5. A prize of £100, presented by Speedway Star, was awarded each time the helmet was raced for.

WESLAKE provided both winners of the British Semi-Finals in the 1975 World Championship. Martin Ashby took the honours at Leicester with a 15-point maximum while, at Sheffield two days later, Ray Wilson also went through the card unbeaten. Runner-up at Blackbird Road was Malcolm  Simmons (14) and the second-placed man at Owlerton was Dave Jessup (13).

SEERY’S STATISTICS showed that Ivan Mauger of Exeter Falcons was topping the Gulf British League averages with 11.87 from seven matches. In the New National League, Birmingham’s Arthur Browning was the top man with 11.12 from his 12 meetings.

Bryan Seery posed the question: Is Division 1 racing just more predictable than that in the National league or is it actually easier to score points in the Gulf League?

It had been a poor week for two NNL clubs. Bradford extended their run of away defeats to 21 while Weymouth’s disappointing away form stretched to their 37th consecutive loss.

AT SHIELFIELD PARK a big crowd was expected for the much-anticipated visit of Ivan Mauger, complete with his golden speedway bike. Mauger was to compete in a set of three match races against Hull’s Jimmy McMillan. The two Gulf League riders would be the icing on the cake of Berwick’s annual Bordernapolis individual competition. Riders taking part included popular Workington Comet Lou Sansom, Newcastle’s Joe Owen and Brian Collins of Coatbridge as well as the regular Bandits.
