Week Ending October 4

WINNER of the New National League Riders’ Championship, held at Wimbledon’s Plough Lane, was Laurie Etheridge of Crayford Kestrels who picked up 13 points from his five rides, beating Coatbridge’s Brian Collins in a run-off. Third placed man was Birmingham’s Arthur Browning.

THE Speedway Star Golden Helmet championship was due to go to a deciding leg at Halifax after John Louis and Malcolm Simmons had both won their respective home ties.

THE third championship of the week went to Anders Michanek who scored a 15-point maximum at Gubbängen, Stockholm to become the 1975 Swedish Champion. Hasse Holmqvist took the runner-up slot after beating Tommy Jansson and Bernt Persson in a three-man run-off.

LACK of interest was cited as the reason for the cancellation of two scheduled international matches. Scotland v England at Coatbridge on October 17 was due to be followed by England v Scotland at Berwick the next Saturday but the Coatbridge director Jim Wallace told the Speedway Star, ‘Ideally, these meetings should have gone on about the middle of the season. But now, with the curtain coming down on speedway, they’ve lost their magnetism. Gates are falling off and there’s no way we could have pulled in a crowd of 3,000 or more as late as October 17 to justify the expense.’

FOLLOWING a visit to Carlo Biagi, the noted speedway doctor, Ivan Mauger was delighted to be given the go-ahead to carry on riding for the remainder of the season. Earlier, he had been warned that he may need to take a three-month break from any sort of motorcycle racing but the problem had turned out to be tennis elbow!

Mauger wrote in his weekly column, ‘When I went up to see (Dr Biagi) the waiting room was like a speedway pits. A couple of Birmingham boys were there to see him and when I left, his next patient was terry Betts who had been having a few hand problems since mid-summer.’
